‘In Waves’

Netflix has acquired Cannes Critics’ Week opening night film In Waves for the world excluding France.

The French animated feature from Franco Vietnamese director Phuong Mai Nguyen opened the festival’s parallel section for first and second features last week.

Set in Los Angeles, the film centres on shy teen AJ, who loves skateboarding and drawing, and a girl who lives for surfing. They fall in love, but their happiness is threatened by a sudden illness.

The English-language voice cast is led by Will Sharpe and Stephanie Hsu.

The film is based on the graphic novel by AJ Dungo and written by Fanny Burdino and Samuel Doux.

France’s Silex Films produced with Anonymous Content and the producers are Priscilla Bertin and Judith Nora. Executive producers are David Levine, Yohann Comte, Carole Baraton, Pierre Mazars, Sharpe, Hsu, Nick Shumaker and David Levine on behalf of Anonymous Content. Charades is handling sales.

Anonymous Content’s David Levine and Nick Shumaker commented: “From the very start, we were energized by Mai’s unmistakable talent and the ability of AJ’s story to deeply move audiences. This exciting partnership with Netflix will ensure that our romantic, coming-of-age story reaches people all over the world.”

Silex’s Bertin added: “I am very happy about this partnership with Netflix and their enthusiasm for In Waves, which gives us the opportunity to reach the broadest possible audience and share this deeply moving true love story with the world.”

The deal was first reported by Variety.
