EXCLUSIVE: South Korea’s Plus M Entertainment has boarded sales of upcoming folk horror Maiden Home, starring Indonesian scream queen Asmara Abigail, and will introduce international buyers to the feature at Busan’s Asian Contents & Film Market (ACFM).

Directed by South Korean filmmaker Sinn Kirin, the feature is scheduled to begin shooting in January 2027 across a variety of locations in South Korea and Indonesia. Kalimantan, Bali and Sukabumi are among the areas of Indonesia being considered for filming.

The story follows an Indonesian woman named Yuli who comes to Korea as a mail-order bride. Ten years into her marriage, husband Jongsoo takes the family back to her village where the balance of power between them gradually shifts in supernatural ways.

The cast is led by Abigail, known for Joko Anwar’s Impetigore, which was Indonesia’s entry to the Oscars in 2020, and Satan’s Slaves, the country’s highest-grossing local film in 2017. She also starred in Woo Ming Jin’s revenge thriller Stone Turtle, which premiered in competition at Locarno in 2022 and won the Fipresci prize.

It marks the feature directorial debut of Kirin, whose shorts include Happily Ever After, Abnormal Prime Time and O Ki-in’s Sin, Misattribution.

At project stage, Maiden Home was selected for the Talents Tokyo lab and Bifan’s Network of Asian Fantastic Films (NAFF), where it won the VIPO Award in 2023.

It is produced by Indiestory, the company behind Jeong Seung-o’s Coming Of Age, which premiered in Busan’s Vision section last year. Co-producers are Indonesia’s Infinite Studios and Taiwan’s Screenworks.

Plus M Entertainment is a leading studio in South Korea, which handled sales of Na Hong-jin’s Cannes Competition title Hope and sold the film to more than 200 territories.

The ACFM runs from October 10-13 alongside Busan International Film Festival.
