EXCLUSIVE: Hong Kong sales company Golden Scene has boarded world sales for Ang Geck Geck Priscilla’s Rotterdam winning Ah Girl, Philip Yung’s Hong Kong Chinese New Year comedy The Snowball On A Sunny Day, and Patrick Leung Pak-Kin’s Ciao, UFO, ahead of Hong Kong Filmart (March 17-20).
Ang’s feature debut Ah Girl premiered in Rotterdam’s Bright Future competition where it won the youth jury award. Set in 1990s Singapore, the film is inspired by Ang’s personal experience and follows a seven-year-old girl who navigates the confusing world of adults as she is forced to grow up quickly following the separation of her parents.
It is produced by Aggregate Films, IFA Media and Kusu Films, with funding support from Singapore’s Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA) through its New SG Director grant, and Thailand’s Purin Film Fund.
The Snowball On A Sunny Day is one of the top Chinese New Year titles, with a cumulative Hong Kong box office of HK$13.4m (as of March 1) since opening on Valentine’s Day. It will next open in Malaysia on March 5 through Golden Screen Cinemas.
Starring Elaine Jin, Chung Suet Ying and Edan Lui, the comedy centres on a young woman who fails to buy the winning lottery ticket for her grandmother and puts up a show to pretend that they have struck the enormous Chinese New Year Snowball draw.
Ciao, UFO was named best film by the Hong Kong Film Critics Society in January and is one of the frontrunners at the upcoming Hong Kong Film Awards, with 10 nominations including best film and best director for Leung.
Based on a popular Hong Kong urban legend, the nostalgic drama tells the coming-of-age story of four childhood friends whose lives change drastically after witnessing a mysterious flying object in the 1980s.
It is produced by Amy Chin (Papa) with a cast led by Tsui Tien-You, Charlene Choi, Wong You-Nan and Michelle Wai. The film premiered at the Hong Kong Asian Film Festival in 2019, but its release faced delays partly due to the global pandemic. It is now scheduled to open locally on March 19.
The world sales by Golden Scene excludes Singapore for Ah Girl; mainland China for Ciao, UFO; and Hong Kong (handled by Mei Ah Entertainment), Taiwan and mainland China (both by director Yung’s production company Word By Word) for The Snowball On A Sunny Day.
