‘Game Of Thrones’

HBO reclaimed its crown at this year’s Primetime Emmy awards on Sunday (September 22) night, with Game Of Thrones taking the best drama series award as expected but adding only one other prize to its haul on the night.

Fleabag, from Amazon and the BBC, provided most of the surprises and was the biggest winner on the night. It earned four prizes including comedy series, lead actress and writing for Phoebe Waller-Bridge, and directing for Harry Bradbeer. Veep, a frequent Emmy winner in previous years, was completely shut out.

Six months into the impasse between the Writers Guild of America and the major agencies, most of the winning writers did not thank their agents. Besides that, the host-less 71st Primetime Emmy Awards show at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles was free of controversy.

Patricia Arquette, winner of the supporting actress in a limited series for The Act, made a plea for more employment for transgender talents and Jharrel Jerome, who took the lead actor in a limited series prize for When They See Us, drew applause for introducing the ‘Exonerated Five,’ subjects of the series, who are sometimes known as the Central Park Five.

HBO shows won nine awards on the last of this year’s three Emmy ceremonies (the two Creative Arts Emmy ceremonies were held last weekend), giving the network a total for this year of 34. Netflix, which started with the second-highest nomination tally, took four awards on the night for 27 overall. And Amazon benefited from Fleabag’s success by taking seven awards on the night, for an overall tally of 15.

In smaller Emmy night surprises, HBO’s Chernobyl beat Netflix’s When They See Us for the best limited series award and Netflix’s interactive Black Mirror instalment Bandersnatch pipped HBO’s Deadwood: The Movie for the television movie prize.

Celebrated during the awards ceremony for its record-breaking final season, Game Of Thrones came out of the night with a total of 12 Emmys over the three ceremonies, equalling but not beating the record it set in 2015 for the biggest haul for a single season. Besides its best drama prize, the series brought Peter Dinklage his fourth supporting actor in a drama series statuette.

Fleabag’s four awards complement the two it won last weekend in the Creative Arts ceremonies, and Chernobyl added three prizes to the seven it took last weekend.
