‘Game Of Thrones’

HBO and its departing blockbuster Game Of Thrones took the dragon’s share of the honours as nominations for the 71st Emmy awards were announced on Tuesday (July 16).

HBO took 137 nominations in total, topping the 117 scored by its streaming rival Netflix. The tally put HBO back on top after its 2018 total of 108 saw it beaten out for the first time by Netflix, with 112. The two companies went on to win 23 Emmys each in last year’s awards ceremony. HBO’s total also broke its own record (126 in 2015) for the most nominations to a network in a single year.

A record 32 nominations for the final season of Game Of Thrones beat the single-year nomination total set by NYPD Blue a quarter of a century ago. HBO’s limited series Chernobyl also made a strong showing in the drama categories, earning 19 nominations. Netflix’s biggest honouree was limited series When They See Us on 16 nominations.

Among other platforms vying for the prestige bestowed by Emmy nominations, Amazon Prime Video made a big jump from 22 nominations last year to 47 this year. FX saw its tally slip from 50 last year to 32 this, and Hulu dropped from 27 to 20.

In the flagship outstanding drama series category, five of the eight nominees – Ozark, Pose, Succession and UK-made series Bodyguard and Killing Eve – made the list for the first time. They were joined in the category by Better Call Saul, Game Of Thrones, and This Is Us.

Final-round voting for the Emmys runs from August 15-29 and the awards will be presented at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles on Sunday, September 22.
