
EXCLUSIVE: Japan’s Bitters End has closed the first sales of Sai: Disaster, the psychological suspense thriller that premiered in Competition at San Sebastian.
The film has been acquired for France (Art House Films), South Korea (EQTY through distribution arm Livet) and Taiwan (Proview Entertainment). Negotiations are underway for further territories including the US, UK, Spain, Portugal and Southeast Asia.
Directed by Yutaro Seki and Kentaro Hirase, the film stars Teruyuki Kagawa (Creepy) and Anne Nakamura (Grand Maison Paris). The directing duo, collectively known as gogatsu, previously premiered their feature Roleless at San Sebastian in 2021.
Sai: Disaster follows six seemingly unrelated individuals whose everyday lives are suddenly shattered by inexplicable calamities. Unknown to them, a mysterious man has already infiltrated their worlds. Invisible to the characters but perceived by the audience, his presence gradually manifests itself as the embodiment of disaster.
Released in Japan on February 20, the film earned (¥50m) within its first 13 days.
The film is produced by Wowow, with Bitters End handling both international sales and Japanese distribution.
At Hong Kong Filmart this week, Bitters End is also representing Oscar-winner Ryusuke Hamaguchi’s upcoming All Of A Sudden and Yukiko Sode’s adaptation of Mieko Kawakami bestseller All The Lovers In The Night.
