‘Battle Royale’

Japanese studio Toei is debuting at JAFF Market through its new international division to venture into the Indonesian market and seek local partners for its genre projects, including upcoming horror Genius Loci.

The international production team, established in April last year, aims to seek opportunities to co-finance, co-develop and co-produce original film and TV series for the international market.

The priority is to create local language works that can resonate with audiences in their home territories. Toei may take on Japanese distribution and international sales to bring out the projects’ full potential.

One such project is Genius Loci, a horror film shot set to be shot in Indonesia. It is in development, with further details under wraps.

Toei is the first Japanese exhibitor at the JAFF market, which is in its second edition and runs from November 29-December 2 in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, in conjunction with Jogja-NETPAC Asian Film Festival (JAFF).

Toei’s Battle Royale is playing at JAFF with a 4K screening to celebrate the iconic film’s 25th anniversary.

Shiori Takata, director of production and head of film licensing of Toei’s international division, is set to speak on a panel on Sunday (November 30) titled Expanding The Horizon of Asian Cinema Today, along with Nelson Mok from Mokster Films, Eric Lin from Damai Entertainment and Phong Duong from Mockingbird Pictures.
