EXCLUSIVE: Production is underway in South Korea on Choi Hana’s Magical Girl Revolution, starring Kim Su-an of Train To Busan.
Filming began on August 19 and will continue into October, with a target release of 2027. Shooting is primarily taking place in Andong, a picturesque city in the east of Korea. Further scenes have been filmed at various university campuses in different regions of the country.
The story follows two friends at university who attempt to save their “magical girl” dance club. Junho Park of Adrenaline Pictures is producing the upcoming feature. Singapore’s Juo Studios joins as a supporting producer.
The cast is led by Kim Su-an, who came to international prominence as a child actor in Yeon Sang-ho’s zombie thriller Train To Busan, which achieved major box office success following its premiere at Cannes in 2016.
She has since appeared in Ryoo Seung-wan’s The Battleship Island and Kim Yong-hwa’s Along With The Gods: The Two Worlds, of which the latter is Korea’s fourth biggest-ever film in terms of admissions. Magical Girl Revolution marks her first prominent adult role.
She is joined by rising newcomer Kim So-wan who starred in Lee Ran-hee’s The Final Semester, which won a hat trick of prizes at Busan in 2024.
At last year’s Busan, the upcoming film won the Songwon Award at the Asian Project Market (APM) under the title Dance Dance Revolution.
It marks the second feature from director Choi, whose indie comedy More Than Family starring Kystal Jung was selected for Busan in 2020. She also co-directed 2025 Tving drama Way Back Love, starring Kim Min-ha.
Adrenaline Pictures launched in 2024 and has a slate of upcoming productions that include romantic drama Three Millimeters To You, co-produced with Japan’s Toei and starring stars Soya Kurokawa (Monster, Kokuho); and Jung Wonhee’s Strange Marriage, which is in post-production.
