Malta’s Mediterrane Film Festival (June 21-29) is set to honour US actor Barbie Ferreira with its inaugural rising star award.

Ferreira, best known for her role in the first two seasons of HBO’s Euphoria, will receive the award at the festival’s Golden Bee awards ceremony in Valletta, Malta, on June 29.

The actor made her feature-film acting debut last year in 2024’s Bob Trevino Likes It. Directed by Tracie Laymon, the film won the SXSW 2024 awards for narrative feature in both the grand jury and audience categories.

The festival has introduced the award for its third edition to recognise an emerging star who has made a breakout contribution to the international filmmaking landscape.

Mediterrane Film Festival director Ray Calleja said: “Barbie Ferreira represents the kind of bold, fearless talent the Mediterrane Film Festival is proud to spotlight. Her work already reflects a distinct voice and powerful screen presence that resonates with a new generation of storytellers. She is a talent on the rise, with a career we believe will help shape the future of cinema.”

This year’s festival marks the centennial of filmmaking in Malta, celebrating 100 years of cinema that have shaped the nation’s creative landscape. Films in competition include Rebecca Lenkiewicz’s Hot Milk, starring Emma Mackey and Fiona Shaw, and Uberto Pasolini’s The Return.

Other Golden Bee awards to be handed out at this weekend’s closing ceremony include best feature film, best performance and the people’s choice award.
