Filmmaker Morgan Neville and Focus Features are reuniting on a feature documentary about Saturday Night Live creator Lorne Michaels.
Lorne is set for US theatrical release by worldwide rights holder Focus on April 17, with Universal Pictures International handling international distribution.
Directed by Neville, the film promises a behind-the-scenes look at Michaels, the creator and longtime producer of SNL, using exclusive archival footage as well as interviews with cast members and writers from the sketch comedy show including Tina Fey, Maya Rudolph, Conan O’Brien and Chris Rock.
Neville will produce the documentary through his A Tremolo Production, along with Lauren Belfer.
Neville, who recently served as executive producer on the SNL50: Beyond Saturday Night documentary miniseries, has previously made films including Roadrunner: A Film About Anthony Bourdain and Won’t You Be My Neighbor? for Focus.
Most recently, Neville directed Man on the Run, about Paul McCartney’s life after the Beatles, which premiered at Telluride and is set for release by Amazon MGM on February 25.
Other documentaries released by Focus have included Wim Wenders’ Pope Francis - A Man Of His Word and Nanette Burstein and Brett Morgen’s The Kid Stays In The Picture. Next month Focus will give a US release to The AI Doc: Or How I Became An Apocaloptimist, from Daniel Roher and Charlie Tyrell.
