Sophie Okonedo

Neon has acquired worldwide rights to Clarissa, a modern reimagining of Virginia Woolf novel Mrs Dalloway set in Nigeria from twin filmmakers Arie and Chuko Esiri. 

Sophie Okonedo, David Oyelowo, India Amarteifio, Ayo Edebiri and Toheeb Jimoh star. 

Neon will the release the film theatrically in the US and its international arm is handling foreign sales, beginning at this week’s EFM in Berlin. 

Shot on 35mm film in Lagos and Delta State, Nigeria, the film follows society woman Clarissa (Okonedo) as she hosts a party and encounters friends from her youth. 

The Esiri twins jointly direct and produce from a screenplay by Chuko. Also producing are Theresa Park for Per Capita Productions and Nicholas Weinstock for Invention Studios. Co-producers include Nina Gold and Thomas Bassett and executive producers include Okonedo, Dolly Omodolapo Kola-Balogun, Osahon Okunbo and Jason Reif. 

Production financing came from Afreximbank Creative Africa Nexus and MBO Capital. 

Arie and Chuko Esiri previously wrote, directed and produced Eyimofe (This Is My Desire), which premiered at the Berlinale in 2020 and went on to win five African Movie Academy Awards.
