EXCLUSIVE: Japanese studio Nikkatsu has secured international sales rights to Night Flower, the upcoming film from award-winning director Eiji Uchida.
The feature will be introduced to buyers at the Asian Contents and Film Market (ACFM) in Busan in September as a key title on Nikkatsu’s slate of upcoming projects.
Keiko Kitagawa stars in the film as a struggling single mother who begins selling drugs to support her children, entering a dangerous world in the process.
Kitagawa is known for her roles in films such as The Fast And The Furious: Tokyo Drift, The Promised Neverland, and The Last Shot In The Bar, for which she was nominated for best supporting actress at the Japan Academy Awards in 2018. She has also starred in Stolen Identity by Ring director Hideo Nakata and Fragments Of The Last Will, which opened Tokyo International Film Festival in 2022.
It reunites the actress with director Uchida having previously worked together on 2023 drama miniseries Rakujitsu (Sunset).
Uchida, who was born in Brazil, is perhaps best known for 2020’s Midnight Swan, which won best picture at the 44th Japan Academy Awards and the Golden Mulberry at the Udine Far East Film Festival. His latest film Gyakka opened in Japanese cinemas on July 11.
Night Flower is based on an original screenplay by Uchida and is set for release in Japan on November 28 through Shochiku.
The project was also named as one of several titles that would be released in South Korea by Plus M Entertainment, as part of a deal with Japan’s KDDI Corporation that was signed during Cannes in May.
