Wildcard Distribution has acquired UK and Ireland rights to Rachel Carey’s comedy Deadly Cuts, which will receive its world premiere as the closing film of the Dublin International Film Festival (DIFF) in March 2021.
Deadly Cuts is produced by Auveen Lush, Ciara Appelbe and Liz Gill of Dubln-based O’Sullivan Productions, which did the deal directly with WIldcard. The film is the directorial debut of Carey and is about a working-class Dublin hair salon where the stylists become accidental vigilantes and community heroes, Angeline Ball, Ericka Roe, Lauren Larkin, Shauna Higgins and Victoria Smurfit star. The film was backed by Screen Ireland.
DIFF will run from March 3-14, and is being planned as a mix of drive-in, cinema and virtual screenings. It will feature a retrospective on black women filmmakers, showcasing films including Amma Asante’s Belle and Maïmouna Doucouré’s 2015 short Maman(s). Doucouré, whose feature Cuties became a subject of controversy this year, is also on the selection committee for the retrospective alongside director-producer Oyindamola Animashaun, and performance artist and writer Felicia Olusanya.
“Now, more than ever, we realise the power of film to build empathy and understand the importance of coming together to share our stories,” said DIFF festival director Gráinne Humphreys “We are working hard to curate and deliver a film festival that inspires and engages audiences, presenting as we do each year, the very best of international and Irish films.”
Deadly Cuts is the first film of the main programme to be announced.
