International Film Circuit has acquired US rights to documentary Sholem Aleichem: Laughing in the Darkness, about the writer who helped forge the modern Jewish identity and whose stories became the basis of musical Fiddler on the Roof.

The film will open on July 8 at New York City’s Lincoln Plaza Cinema and then get a national US rollout.

Written, directed and produced by Joseph Dorman, the Peabody Award-winning creator of Arguing the World, and produced by Riverside Films, Laughing in the Darkness premiered at this year’s New York Jewish Film Festival and has been invited to the upcoming Toronto, San Francisco and Jerusalem Jewish film festivals.

International Film Circuit’s recent releases have included My Perestroika, The Hammer, Shotgun Stories and Oscar-nominated documentary Darwin’s Nightmare.
