EXCLUSIVE: South Korea’s Showbox has secured world sales rights to upcoming mystery horror Devotion, co-directed by Yeon Sang-ho, and an animated sequel to ‘Exorcism Chronicles’.
The sales agent is introducing international buyers to both titles as part of its new slate at the Asian Contents & Film Market (ACFM) in Busan.
Devotion follows two sister influencers, Su-a and Min-a, who run into trouble when Min-a vanishes while on a camping trip. In search of her sister, Su-a stumbles across the abandoned ruins of a shadowy cult where reality begins to unravel.
The cast is led by Moon Geun-young, who starred in Yeon’s Netflix series Hellbound, marking her first lead film role in nine years. She is joined by Kim Si-a of Kill Boksoon and Ko A-sung, who appeared in Bong Joon Ho’s Snowpiercer and The Host.
The film is co-directed by debut filmmaker Yoon Young-woo and produced by Yeon’s Wowpoint with KT StudioGenie as co-producer. Devotion is in post-production and is set for release in 2027.
It marks a busy period for Yeon, whose zombie thriller Colony premiered at Cannes in May before debuting psychological thriller Paradise Lost at Toronto, which was also selected for Busan.
Showbox has also picked up rights to Exorcism Chronicles: The Summoning Portrait, a sequel to 2024’s Exorcism Chronicles: The Beginning.
Director Kim Dong-chul returns to continue the story of a team of exorcists, who investigate multiple murders connected to a cursed painting in the upcoming film.
The voice cast is led by Choi Han, Nam Do-hyeong and Chung Yu-chung who reprise the roles of Father Park, Hyun-am, and Joon-hoo. Kim Yeon-woo, Kim Min-ju and Pyo Young-jae round out the cast.
Based on Lee Woo-hyuk’s 1994 novel Toemarok, it is produced by Locus Animation. A release is scheduled for a 2027 release.
Showbox’s ACFM slate also includes White Blast, a mystery thriller starring Kim Yun-seok of Escape From Mogadishu and Koo Kyo-hwan from Colony. It is helmed by Hong Eui-jeong (Voice Of Silence) and co-directed by Park Sun-woo in his feature debut. A local release is planned for November.
