‘Sons Of The Neon Night’

Crime thriller Sons Of The Neon Night and time-travel adventure Back To The Past are the frontrunners at the 44th Hong Kong Film Awards (HKFA), securing 12 and 11 nominations respectively.

Followed closely behind are nostalgic drama Ciao, UFO and Golden Horse Awards’ best animation winner Another World, with 10 and eight nominations respectively.

All four films are up for the best film along with Peter Chan’s 1940s Shanghai-set crime thriller She’s Got No Name.

Patrick Leung Pak Kin from Ciao, UFO and Tommy Ng Kai Chung from Another World are in the running for best director, against Peter Ho-sun Chan from She’s Got No Name, Shu Qi from Girl and Jonathan Li and Chou Man Yu from Behind The Shadows.

Both Ng and Shu Qi also receive nominations in the best new director category, which also comprises Juno Mak for Sons Of The Neon Night, Kung Siu Ping for Measure In Love and Kwok Ka Hei and Jack Lee Chun Kit for Unidentified Murder.

Louis Koo stands out with two best actor nods for local smash hit Back To The Past and Malaysia-set private eye film Behind The Shadows. He is up against Cheung Kai Chung Louis from Golden Boy, Leung Ka Fai Tony from The Shadow’s Edge and Carlos Chan from Someone Like Me.

Rising star Natalie Hsu is vying for the best actress prize with My First Of May - her second nod in this category following last year’s Last Song We Sing. She is competing with Fish Liew from Someone Like Me, Fala Chen from Peg O’ My Heart as well as with Ma Li from The Dumpling Queen and Zhang Ziyi from She’s Got No Name, both from mainland China.

The nominations across 18 categories were announced on Tuesday (February 10) by Michelle Wai, last year’s HKFA best actress winner for The Last Dance, and Edan Lui from boy band Mirror, who is a previous nominee for best new performer. This year, Wai picks up a best supporting actress nomination for Ciao, UFO, which was named best film by the Hong Kong Film Critics Society last month.

Some 47 films were on the contenders list released last month by HKFA. However, four films deemed eligible were missing from the list: Vincci Cheuk’s Vital Signs, starring Louis Koo and Neo Yau; Valley Of The Shadow Of Death, directed by Jeffrey Lam and Antonio Tam and starring Anthony Wong; Timothy Yeung’s Finch & Midland, also starring Wong; and Chong Keat Aun’s Malaysian drama Mother Bhumi, starring Fan Bingbing.

When local media asked about the matter at the end of the nomination announcement, chairman Derek Yee said that he had been thinking of a reply over the last month, but could not come up with something that would satisfy everyone, hence HKFA deciding not to make any public comment.

The awards ceremony will take place on April 19 at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre.
