‘The De4d Echoes’

EXCLUSIVE: Thai sales and production banner Chada Entertainment is debuting at Filmart with four genre titles from Thailand and Taiwan.

The De4d Echoes is a rare cross-border anthology from Thailand and Malaysia, comprising two stories from each country by four rising directors, connected by themes of karma and retribution. It is backed by new Thai company Exit45 Solutions, Malaysia’s R2A and National Film Development Corporation Malaysia (FINAS), and opens in Thailand on March 26.

Mickey Somprasong V.’s Behind The Screens marks the first Thai remake of 2016 Italian film Perfect Strangers, revolving around a reunion of friends that turns into a psychological drama.

Rounding off Chada Entertainment’s inaugural slate are two Taiwanese titles: theatre director Su Ta’s film debut Oh My Ghost! Oh My God!, a horror comedy starring Japanese comedian Naomi Watanabe - in her first Taiwanese feature film - and Jasper Liu; and Louis Chan’s Suffocation, a 90-minute single-shot horror film, which centres on a swimming team at an elite high school.

The Bangkok-based company was founded by Malaysia-born Kuek Shee Heng, who has lived in Taiwan for the past 15 years. “Great stories have always been what keeps me going in this industry. In recent years I’ve become deeply drawn to Southeast Asian stories,” said Kuek, who oversees production and financing at Chada. “As someone born in Malaysia, it feels like coming home.”

He previously co-produced Busan 2024 award-winner Tale Of The Land and Levitating, which premiered at Sundance in January, both from Indonesia. Kuek also produced upcoming sci-fi fantasy feature The House On The Moon, directed by Locarno award-winning filmmaker Nelson Yeo, through his Taiwan-based Aview Images.

Heading international sales and distribution is Pornpimol Kuek, previously of Black Dragon Entertainment.
