‘The Fantastic Four: First Steps’

The Fantastic Four: First Steps grossed a confirmed $117.2m in North America over its opening weekend, according to distributor Disney, slightly down on weekend estimates of $118m. 

Combined with a confirmed international take of $99m, the Marvel Studios-produced superhero sequel ended up with a global opening take of $216.2m, just behind the $220m opening (including $125m from North America) achieved two weeks ago by Warner Bros/DC’s Superman. 

However First Steps easily eclipsed the domestic openings of three previous Fantastic Four features (all produced and distributed by Fox before the studio’s merger with Disney) as well as those of recent Marvel releases Captain America: Brave New World (with an $88.8m domestic debut in February) and Thunderbolts* (with $74.3m in January). 

In 2005, the original Fantastic Four opened with $56m in North America and went on to take $154.7m domestically and $333.5m worldwide. 

In 2007, sequel Fantastic Four: Rise Of The Silver Surfer started with $58.1m in North America and ended its run with $131.9m domestic and $301.9 worldwide. 

The 2015 reboot, also titled Fantastic Four, managed only a $25.7m domestic opening on its way to a North American total of $56.1m and a global tally of $167.9m. 

Directed by Matt Shakman, First Steps stars Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn and Ebon Moss-Bachrach and now looks set to give the Fantastic Four franchise a new lease on life. Together with Superman, it could also help to restore confidence in the box office strength of the superhero genre.
