‘The Odyssey’ and ‘Brand New Day’ dominate again
Universal’s The Odyssey is back on top of the global box office chart after taking nearly $46m over its eighth weekend on release.
In the final weekend of an industry-boosting summer season, the Christopher Nolan epic grossed an estimated $33m from the international marketplace, dropping just 35% from the previous weekend.
The film’s international total now stands at $1.04bn, making The Odyssey the first Hollywood non-sequel, non-remake to break the billion dollar barrier internationally since Avatar in 2009.
The international haul was helped by an exclusive launch on 62 Imax screens in Japan for a $755,000 gross. The Japan release will widen next weekend.
In North America, The Odyssey took an estimated $13m for the first three days of the four-day Labor Day holiday weekend, traditionally a relatively quiet weekend at the box office. That was down a mere 9% from the previous weekend, taking the film’s domestic total to $584.8m.
The epic’s global tally now stands at $1.63bn, with the UK/Ireland having contributed $111.3m, China $98.4m and France $85.9m.
In its sixth weekend, Sony Pictures and Marvel’s Spider-Man: Brand New Day finally relinquished top spot on the chart, taking an estimated $44.1m.
That took the superhero tale’s global tally to $2.4bn, pushing Brand New Day past Avatar: The Way Of Water to become the third highest grossing film of all time.
The weekend take from international markets was $26.1m, for a $1.48bn total so far, and from North America the film took $18m, for a $917.8m total. The Spider-Man installment passed the $900m domestic mark in 36 days, faster than any film before it, and is now approaching the domestic record take of $936.7m scored by 2015’s Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens.
Brand New Day’s top individual market totals are $230.8m from China, $130m from the UK and $89.8m from Mexico.
‘Coyote Vs Acme’ has legs
After opening better than expected last weekend, Coyote Vs Acme had a strong second weekend with an estimated $20.8m worldwide, $9.5m of it from international and $11.3m from North America.
The hybrid live action/animated comedy has now amassed a total of $57.3m.
In its third weekend, Sony’s Insidious: Out Of The Further had a bigger decline, taking $16.7m for a global tally to date of $137.6m.
The horror franchise entry dropped 44% internationally to gross $10.2m and managed $6.5m (according to Rentrak) for the three-day domestic weekend.
Japanese anime Chiikawa: The Secret Of The Mermaid Island returned to the global chart more than a month after making its first appearance, taking an estimated $12.5m over the weekend for sixth spot. The film’s global total has now reached $84.6m.
‘Mirzapur’ leads new entries
Indian action drama Mirzapur (also known as Mirzapur: The Movie), from Amazon MGM Studios and Excel Entertainment, was the weekend’s highest-grossing new release, entering the chart in fifth place with an estimated $13.7m, all but a million dollars of it from international markets.
Adapted from the Prime Video crime series of the same title, the Hindi-language feature stars Ali Farzal, Pankaj Tripathi and Divyendu Sharma (all from the streaming series) in a story about the contenders to control a city’s violent underworld. Gurmmeet Singh (who also worked on the series) directs.
Cruising into eighth spot on the chart was the twentieth anniversary re-release of Disney/Pixar’s animated classic Cars, which took an estimated $8m worldwide, $6.1m of it from the first three days of the weekend in North America.
Also opening this weekend, but not quite making it into the top ten, was By Any Means, which took an estimated $7.4m over the three-day weekend in North America through Paramount Pictures.
The true story-based crime thriller stars Yahya Abdul-Mateen II and Mark Wahlberg as a young Black FBI agent and a notorious mob hitman who team up to investigate the murder of civil rights leaders in 1960s Mississippi. Elegance Bratton directs.
