Guy Nattiv’s thriller The Liberation starring Carrie Coon, Lily James and Bella Ramsey, and The Idiot(s) starring Aimee Lou Wood and Johnny Flynn are among 11 films that have been added to the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF, September 10-20) lineup of 293 titles.
The Liberation (formerly Harmonia) is about a woman who joins an all-female commune and is forced into a difficult decision when her daughters unexpectedly arrive and are drawn into the group. The film also stars Odessa Young and Tracy Letts.
The Idiot(s) tells the story of Fyodor Dostoevsky and his second wife Anna Dostoevskaya, who helped the Russian literary giant overcome his troubles while he wrote The Idiot. Malgorzata Szumowska and Michal Englert co-directed the feature and the cast includes Vicky Krieps and Christian Friedel.
Both Special Presentations entries are designated Canadian premieres, which, due to their absence from the Venice lineup, indicates they will first screen at Telluride Film Festival (September 4-7).
Also joining the TIFF roster are the Canadian premieres of Martin McDonagh’s Wild Horse Nine and Werner Herzog’s Bucking Fastard. Both will screen at Telluride after their previously announced world premieres in Venice.
There are world premieres for Bahman Ghobadi’s horror Trees Are Watching from Turkey as Centrepiece; Scot McFadyen and Sam Dunn’s documentary Neil Peart: No One’s Disciple about the late drummer of Canadian rock giants Rush; Peter Ho-Sun Chan’s drama The Road Not Taken; and Cody Fern’s Australian family drama Closing Night with Naomi Watts.
TIFF’s In Conversation series brings on-stage talks with Andrew Scott, whose Elsinore premieres in Special Presentations; South Korean actor Lee Min-ho, who stars in TIFF selection The Assassin(s); director and Oscar-nominated cinematographer Rachel Morrison, attending with the world premiere of her second feature Love Of Your Life; and comedian and Misty Green director Chris Rock.
