My Camera, My Gun, a Portugese-Japanese documentary project from director and writer Toru Kubota, took home the top prize at the pitching session of this year’s Taiwan Creative Content Fest (TCCF), which wrapped yesterday (November 7).
The project won the TAICCA X CNC Award, worth $30,000, and is presented jointly by the Taiwan Creative Content Agency (TAICCA) and France’s Centre national du cinéma et de l’image animée (CNC).
The in-production documentary film, produced by Antonio Ribeiro and Golriz Kolahi at Moon Road Media & Films, takes place during the war in Myanmar, where director Kubota himself was once taken prisoner.
“The film is about people using their cameras as weapons of resistance,” said Kubota on receiving the award. “I’m now even more driven to move forward in telling this important story.”
TAICCA’s other award, the TWD300,000 Best Story award, was given to Rogue Bookstore, a project based on a comic and produced by Taiwan’s Mirror Fiction.
The project to win the most awards was Do You Still Love Me, which was presented in TCCF’s new romance-themed series showcase. The project, produced by IPis Innovation Co., Ltd., went home with five awards.
“This is a story about love and marriage,” said its producer Mimi Wang accepting one of its awards. “The pitch went like this: ‘Are you married? And do you still believe in love?’”
Other multiple award winners included the projects Naked In Glendale, Never The Bride, Mother Tongue, Up To The Buffalo, Goodbye My Love and Monsters Only Café.
This year’s Pitching section had nearly 700 submissions from 44 countries and regions, with a total of 94 projects from 19 countries and regions ultimately selected, surpassing last year’s 62 projects. Top submitting territories aside from Taiwan were Japan, Thailand, the United States, South Korea, and Singapore, and international submissions or co-productions accounted for 60% of entries.
The overall prize pool was approximately $320,000 (TD$10m), which surpassed last year’s $240,000. New awards this year included the ChiLing’s Future Makers Awards established by actress Lin ChiLing’s Chiling Charity Foundation, which were jointly worth TWD1.5m (approx. $48,000) across three awards.
This year’s TCCF ran for four days between November 4 and 7, and also included Market and Forum sections featuring sessions from across the Taiwanese and wider Asian content industry. TCCF has so far recorded a visit count of 17,794 over its first three days, surpassing last year’s four-day total of 15,000.
