The UK Cinema Association (UKCA), the organisation representing around 90% of UK cinema operators, is providing deaf awareness training for cinema staff across the UK, which includes introductory British Sign Language (BSL).

The training will be delivered by Norway-based Attensi, which specialises in game-based simulation training.

UKCA has partnered with the British Deaf Association, the Film Distributors’ Association and Paramount Pictures UK for the scoping and shaping of the content.

Training will be offered to all staff at UKCA-affiliated cinemas and delivered via an app alongside in-cinema tasks and activities. It is up to the individual operators on whether the training is mandatory for staff.

“This partnership with Attensi reflects our ongoing dedication to improving access and inclusion in UK cinemas,” said James Connor, senior policy and projects manager of the UKCA. ”We believe that every customer deserves a welcoming and enjoyable experience, and increasing deaf awareness is a key part of making that vision a reality in our member cinemas.”
