Matt Brodlie and Jonathan Kier’s Upgrade Productions has recruited former Mediawan and Leonine Studios executive Caroline Kusser as executive vice president, head of series.

Kusser will oversee series development, production and distribution strategy at Upgrade, the Los Angeles-based company launched a year ago to make local-language series and film for a global audience. Before Mediawan and Leonine she did stints at Fremantle and Red Arrow International, working on series including Picnic At Hanging Rock and The Sister

Upgrade is backed by Germany’s Constantin Film and headed, as co-presidents, by former Disney+ executive Brodlie and former Sierra/Affinity president Kier.

The company’s series development slate includes Japanese-language project A True Novel, produced by Shochiku; Spanish fantasy La Jaula, co-produced with DeAPlaneta and Minoria Absoluta; Australian strand Sausages; and Japanese mystery Twenty Faces, co-produced with The Klockworx.

Brodlie and Kier, to whom Kusser will report, commented: “Caroline brings a wealth of development, production and distribution experience to the role and is the ideal executive to spearhead our growing series slate. She has an extraordinary track record with tremendous relationships in the industry and we are delighted that she is joining Upgrade during this exciting time of growth.”
