Filmmaker and actor Werner Herzog is to receive the Donostia Award for outstanding contribution to cinema at this year’s San Sebastian International Film Festival, which will also screen his latest film, Bucking Fastard.
The German director, writer and producer will be presented with the honour during the opening gala of the 74th edition of the festival on September 18.
Herzog has made 80 films over the past six decades, ranging from scripted features such as Aguirre, The Wrath Of God (1972), Nosferatu The Vampyre (1979), Fitzcarraldo (1982) and The Bad Lieutenant: Port Of Call – New Orleans (2009) to landmark documentaries including Little Dieter Needs To Fly (1997), Grizzly Man (2005) and Cave Of Forgotten Dreams (2010).
He also founded the Rogue Film School, acted in Jack Reacher and The Mandalorian and has guested in The Simpsons, has published poetry and prose, staged about a dozen operas, and created art installation Hearsay of the Soul, for the Biennale of the Whitney Museum in New York and the Getty Museum in Los Angles.
Bucking Fastard, his latest scripted film, stars Rooney and Kate Mara as twin sisters whose extraordinary bond leads them to speak in unison, love the same man and share the same dreams.
It will screen at the Victoria Eugenia Theatre ahead of the award ceremony. This will follow its premiere at Venice, where it screens in competition.
Previous recipients of the Donostia Award in recent years include Jennifer Lawrence, Pedro Almodovar, Hayao Miyazaki and Cat Blanchett.
SSIFF runs from September 18-26.
