EXCLUSIVE: Japanese distributor Sunny Film has picked up Zhang Lu’s latest award-winning films Gloaming In Luomu and Mothertongue from Beijing Monar Films.
Last year the two films premiered back-to-back at Busan and Tokyo respectively, winning the Busan Award for best film and Tokyo’s best director prize.
China-born Korean director Zhang created subtle connections between the two films, which share the same main cast - Bai Baihe, Liu Dan, and Wang Chuanjun - who even wear the same wardrobe, but with different storylines, as if set in a parallel universe.
He made Mothertongue in Chengdu city before reuniting the cast and crew for Gloaming In Luomo, which was shot in the ancient city of Luomo at the foot of Mount Emei, also in Sichuan province.
At Hong Kong Filmart, Beijing Monar Films is also launching 3D Chinese animated film Demon Agent. Set in the Tang Dynasty, Cheng Teng’s fantasy feature follows a sharp-tongued young man who dreams of becoming Chang’an city’s top detective and teams with a wolf boy to solve a bizarre murder case.
