Amazon Studios has ordered a series version of Janice Y K Lee’s novel The Expatriates as the first fruit of its new deal with Nicole Kidman’s Blossom Films.
Alice Bell, best known for Australian miniseries The Slap, will write the series, set in the close-knit expatriate community of Hong Kong with a cast of female characters including an American architect, a Korean-American college graduate, a Brit, an Australian and a Chinese socialite.
Kidman and Per Saari will serve as executive producers for Blossom, and Theresa Park for POW! Productions. Lee, for whom The Expatriates was a 2016 follow-up to her hit 2009 debut The Piano Teacher, will be a consulting producer.
Kidman and Blossom last month signed a first-look deal with Amazon covering theatrical features, television series and digital content.
Kidman’s other television projects include the second season of HBO’s Big Little Lies and The Undoing, an HBO limited series that will reunite her with Big Little Lies creator David E Kelley.

It’s a compelling exploration of the strength of these women as they persevere through struggles with marriage, career, parenting and unimaginable loss.”
Kidman added: “I’m so thrilled about the Blossom-Amazon collaboration. The Expatriates is just the beginning of our shared goal in making delicious stories with something meaningful to say about the world.”
