Written and to be directed by Mehta and produced by long-time producing partner David Hamilton, the $3m feature goes to camera on November 5 in Toronto followed by filming in India. Mongrel Media will be releasing the film in Canada.
Zinta, whose Bollywood credits include Jaan-E-Mann and Krrish, will play a young Indian woman who finds herself in an abusive relationship with an Indo-Canadian. To escape her terrible reality, she fashions an alternative reality. Zinta is also a featured player in The Last Lear, screening at TIFF this year. Seema Biswas, the lead in Mehta's Water, will also be in the new film.
Water, nominated for best foreign-language Oscar, earned $13m worldwide.
