Ibon Cormenzana’s Arcadia Motion Pictures are set to produce an alternative version of Snow White set in 1920s Spain, written and directed by Pablo Berger and starring Maribel Verdu.

“The film will be faithful to the spirit of the popular story from the Brothers Grimm, and it will be a faithful recreation of the unforgettable 1920s down to the clothes, hats and cars.. with elements of fantasy, horror and black humour,” says Berger, who had great success with his multi award-winning comedy drama Torremolinos 73.

Snow White will be produced by Cormenzana and Berger, and is also being backed by Mama Films and Noodles Production and Motion investment group.

Music will also play a key role throughout the film to help set the tone with renowned composter Alberto Iglesias (Talk To Her, The Constant Gardner) onboard to provide the score.

Shooting is due to take place this summer with major Spanish actress Maribel Verdu (Pan’s Labyrinth, Tetro) already confirmed to play Snow White’s step mother, and Arcadia Motion Pictures is currently searching for a 7 to 10 year old girl and a 14 to 18 year old to play Snow White at different stages in her life.

Arcadia Motion Pictures is also the co-producer of Mateo Gil’s western Blackthorn, starring Sam Shepard and Eduardo Noriega, which will be released in Spain by Vertice Cine next month, and Cormenzana supported Edward and Rory McHenry’s puppet animation Jackboots On Whitehall using Spain’s 18% tax incentive.
