Spain’s Antena 3 Films, the cinema production wing of broadcaster Antena 3, is set to co-produce sequels to the hugely successful local-language comedy dramas Brain Drain and Three Metres Above The Sky.

Fernando Gonzalez Molina [pictured] will return to the director’s chair and Ramon Salazar will write the script for Tengo Ganas De Ti, following their successful collaboration on Three Meters Above The Sky, which has taken the local box office by storm with $13m so far through Warner Bros.

Three Meters’ young leads Mario Casas and Maria Valverde will reprise their roles in Tengo Ganas De Ti as a bad boy with a good heart and a wealthy high school girl with a naughty streak who get into trouble.

The same production companies are also onboard with Antena 3 Fims sharing duties with Zeta Audiovisual, Cangrejo Films and Globomedia.

Shooting of the film is expected to take place mid 2011.

But Gonzalez Molina will not be directing Brain Drain 2, the sequel to his successful 2009 comedy, which took $10m in Spain, instead Carlos Theron will be taking the helm.

Brain Drain writers Alex Pina and Curro Velazquez, however, will re-unite for the sequel, following on from the original about an average student called Emilio, played by Mario Casas, who decided with his friends to follow the girl of his dreams to Oxford University where they caused havoc on campus.

Brain Drain 2 is still in development with Antena 3 Films sharing production duties with Gangrejo Films and Globomedia. No cast members have yet been confirmed.

Antena 3 Films has also joined Rodrigo Cortes’ hotly anticipated thriller Red Lights, starring Robert De Niro and Sigourney Weaver, as associate producers, alongside Catalan broadcaster TV3.

Shooting begins next month in Barcelona on the film, which sees Weaver play a psychologist who enlists her protégé (Cillian Murphy) to investigate a renowned psychic (De Niro). Adrian Guerra is producing through his Barcelona-based outfit Versus Entertainment, alongside Parlay Films in the US, Blue Storm Productions in Canada and Korea’s CSe Entertainment.

Other high-profile Antena 3 Films co-productions include Juan Carlos Fresnadillo’s forthcoming film Intruders, starring Clive Owen, and last year’s You Will Meet A Tall Dark Stranger, directed by Woody Allen.

Antena 3 Films co-produces between seven and 10 films per year with the broadcaster required under Spain’s audiovisual law to invest 3% of its annual income in local and European films and TV programmes.
