Eros teams with Jimmy Shergill to tap Punjabi market

Indian studio Eros International is expanding its presence in the Punjabi film market thanks to a coproduction deal with leading Punjabi actor Jimmy Shergill.

The first film in the four-strong slate between Eros and Jimmy Shergill Productions is Taur Mitran Di, currently in production, starring Amrinder Gill, Ranvijay Singh, Surveen Chawla and Amita Pathak.

Taur Mitran Di will be followed by a project starring Jimmy Shergill, due to get underway in early 2012.

Commenting on the development, Sunil Lulla, vice-chairman, Eros International Plc, said: “Jimmy Shergill has made an indelible mark in Punjabi films and Eros is looking forward to partnering with him as we continue to expand our presence in the regional film markets.”

Jimmy Shergill added: “Punjabi cinema is growing with every film and I am really happy to tie-up with Eros as a systematic corporate approach will help us take Punjabi cinema forward and present on a global platform.”

Eros’ first Punjabi title of the current financial year, Tirlok Malik’s Khushiyaan, starring Jasbir Jassi, Kulbhushan Kharbanda, Rama Vij, Tisca Chopra and Deep Dhillon will release worldwide on 14 October.

The company’s first foray into regional Punjabi film was in 2008 with Hashar.
