Agora producers Mod Producciones have joined Daniel Sanchez Arevalo’s new $4m comedy project Primos as co-producers alongside Atipica Films.

The film will tell the story of a young man named Diego who dumps his fiancée a few days before their wedding and then years later returns to a small town in search of a childhood sweetheart.

Shooting is set to begin next month in Comillas, a small town in the northern Spanish region of Cantabria, and previous Sanchez Arevalo collaborators Raul Arevalo, Antonio De La Torre and Quim Gutierrez are all set to star, alongside up-and-coming actress Clara Lago.

Mod Producciones previously produced Alejandro Amenabar’s historical epic Agora, which took $30m in Spain last year through Fox, and Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu’s film Biutiful, starring Javier Bardem, which is in competition at Cannes. They also backed Oskar Santos’ debut feature For The Good Of Others, which was produced by Amenabar and written by Sanchez Arevalo.

Sanchez Arevalo won several awards for his first two features as director DarkBlueAlmostBlack and Gordos, both of which were produced by Atipica’s previous incarnation as Tesela Producciones.

Spanish broadcasters TVE and Canal + Spain have already pre-bought the TV rights for Primos.
