The Academy Of Motion Picture Arts And Sciences screened a digital restoration of Who Framed Roger Rabbit to a packed house on Thursday [4] night at the Samuel Goldwyn Theatre in Beverly Hills to celebrate the film’s 25th anniversary.
The evening included a lively post-screening discussion about the film with director Robert Zemeckis [pictured, right] and members of the cast and crew, including actress Joanna Cassidy, voice actor Charles Fleischer [pictured, left], supervising animator Andreas Deja, screenwriter Peter S Seaman and associate producers Don Hahn and Steve Starkey.
“This was truly a labour of love. We did it for the love of the art form, truly,” said Zemeckis, who, despite acknowledging that Who Framed Roger Rabbit was groundbreaking, marvelled at current stereoscopic film technology compared to that of the 1980s, when having a fax machine on the film set was considered cutting edge.
“Everyone must have sensed our true passion when we were talking about doing this movie… what it would be like, and how zany it would be,” added Zemeckis. “I’m so grateful that they had the courage to make the movie.”
The panel was moderated by Wreck-It Ralph director Rich Moore, who was later successful - to the delight of the audience - in eliciting from Fleischer an original Roger Rabbit quote: “Please… I would never do it here, not at the Academy!”
