Scottish Screen has announced that it will invest $1.5m (£750,000) in the specialist exhibition sector in Scotland. The funds are part of along-term strategy to promote the development and provision ofcultural cinema programming throughout the country.

Among the fundingrecipients are the Glasgow Film Theatre, Dundee Contemporary Arts andthe Edinburgh International Film Festival (EIFF).

Scottish Screen hasincreased funding to the EIFF to $495,000 (£250,000), which comes on top of therecent UK Film Council announcement that their Film Festival Strategywill invest $3.6m (£1.8m) in the EIFF over the next three years.

Thefestival will now have an annual budget of close to $4m (£2m) as itseeks to redefine itself as afestival of discovery, new talent andfirst features in its regular new slot of June.

Scottish Screen has also awarded Cultural Cinema Hub status to a number of venues as part of a move to strengthen the network ofvenues offering areas of expertise to the country as a whole. Dundee Contemporary Arts, for instance, will support initiatives throughout Scotland dedicated to children and young audiences.

The investment is supplied through Scottish Screen's Grant In Aidfunds. It is claimed this will free up existing Lottery fundingfor a number of new projects aimed at developing audiences withinScotland.
