Shrek 2 added approximately $50.5m this weekend, despiteadding only one new territory, to pass the $250m international mark.

A week of stellar holdovers saw thefilm take $49.1m from UIP territories over the weekend. UIP also opened theanimated hit in the Czech Republic where it grossed $354,795 from 26 screens.

Shrek 2 also took approximately $1.35m from South Korea andHong Kong over its eighth weekend in those territories, where it is handled byCJ Entertainment.

The CJ territories have giventhe sequel approximately $17.6m to date. Added to UIP's $239.3m cumulative sofar this gives an international total of almost $257m.

Shrek 2 has already surpassed the original Shrek's$215m total international gross and with major territories including Japan,Italy and Russia, as well as the Nordic territories, among those still toreceive the film it looks like having some way to go yet.

It is already the seventhbiggest animated film ever in the international market having surpassed ToyStory 2's $240m. The next target will be Spirited Away's $265m whichit should pass, along with Monsters, Inc.'s $270m and Tarzan's$277m, this week.
