Shrek The Third continues to hold the top spot despite the release of two highly anticipated action films - Transformers and Die Hard 4.0.
The green ogre was up 5% - largely led by an impressive $33.5m opening in the UK - and generated $60.9m over the three-day period. Transformers opened in 10 territories this weekend, giving the robots a $36.2m take, while John McClane was back with a vengeance in Die Hard 4.0, which grossed $30.9m from 35 territories.
Animated rat adventure Ratatouille opened strongly, taking $5.8m from nine territories and new Bollywood product Apne and Aap Ka Surroor had solid openings, with $1.8m and $1.5m respectively. Hostel: Part II was up 43% due to a $1.3m UK opening, while 28 Weeks Later re-entered the chart after taking $1.04m in its first weekend in Spain.
