Copenhagen based Smile Entertainment has acquired the Scandinavian rights to Andrei Zvyagintsev's multiple-award winning debut feature, The Return.

The film, which began its successful festival run in Venice by securing the Golden Lion, will screen at both Sweden's biggest festival in Gothenburg as well as at the Norwegian Tromsoe International Film Festival.

The Return recently won the European Discovery of the Year Award at the European Film Awards, is nominated for a Golden Globe and is the Russian entry for the Academy Awards.

Timo Lahtinen's Smile Entertainment expect to open the film theatrically across the region during 2004, where it recently released such films as Chen Kaige's Together, Asif Kapadia's The Warrior and Sam Raimi's classic Evil Dead. Other new acquisitions include Khyentse Norbu's Travellers & Magicians as well as Austin Chick's XX/XY starring Mark Ruffalo and Kathleen Robertson.
