MediaPro, one of Spain's largest media companies is about to grow significantly bigger if merger talks with local TV powerhouse Globomedia are successful.

MediaPro confirmed that it had entered negotiations earlier this summer with Globomedia on a possible merger or, what may be more likely in the short term, a wide-ranging agreement to capitalise on synergies between the two heavyweight companies.

MediaPro has interests in dozens of outfits spanning content creation, production services, rights brokering and post-production facilities - although its founding partners come from the TV sector. It co-produced Oliver Stone's Comandante and Fernando Leon's Mondays In The Sun (Los Lunes Al Sol), and is currently shooting Leon's new Euros 4m prostitution drama Princesas.

MediaPro also runs joint venture Prodigius, a TV movie producer, with DeA Planeta; has a film and TV co-production deal with the Almodovar brothers' El Deseo, and owns stakes in producers Esicma and Ovideo TV.

Backed by publishing and media giant Vocento (formerly Grupo Correo), Globomedia forms part of the pan Spanish-Latin American Arbol Group and is one of the most successful TV producers in Spain, currently enjoying top ratings and international sales with weekly family series Los Serranos.
