Star TV plans to launch a classic Hindi film channel, Star Gold, in India on August 15.
The News Corp-owned broadcaster has reportedly acquired a library of around 500 Hindi films for the launch which kicks off with Indian classic Mugul E Azam, described as a Hindi Gone With The Wind.
The channel will broadcast six to eight films a day along with the music repertoires of famous artists such as KL Saigal. Rights to Hindi classics are sold for a fraction of the $0.5m-$1m price tag for recently produced films.
Star has also begun talks to acquire Tamil-language channel Vijay TV from United Television (UTV). Star, which already holds a 12% stake in UTV, is also planning to launch channels in the Southern Indian languages of Kannada, Malayalam and Telugu.
