Feng Xiaogang’s war drama The Assemblywas the big winner at the 27th Golden Rooster Awards, mainland China’s top film honours (Oct 17), winning four prizes including best film and best director.

The Huayi Brothers production also won best cinematography and best music. Another Huayi Bros’ production, Cao Baoping’s The Equation Of Love And Death, took home best actress for Zhou Xun’s performance.

The best film award was shared with Chen Kaige’s Forever Enthralled, a biopic about Peking opera master Mei Lanfang, which also won best supporting actor for Wang Xueqi.

The best actress award was also shared, with Jiang Wenli, for her performance as an aspiring music teacher in Gu Changwei’s And The Spring Comes. Best actor went to Wu Gang, who played a legendary oil industry worker in IronMan.

Black comedy A Tale Of Two Donkeys, set during the cultural revolution period of the 1970s, took awards for best debut film, presented to its young director Li Dawei, and best supporting actress for Yue Hong.

The Golden Rooster Awards and Full Blossom Awards, held every two years by the China Filmmakers Association, are considered the highest honour for mainland Chinese filmmakers.

The former are selected by a jury, while the latter are selected by the public. The two awards are held in alternate years. However, the Golden Rooster Full Blossom Film Festival is held every year. 

The next Golden Rooster Full Blossom Film Festival, and the Full Blossom Awards, will be held in Jiangyin city of Jiangsu province in October 2010. This year the awards were held in Nanchang Cityin Jiangxi.
