Entertainment Film Distriibutors won the battle of theopeners this week, which saw eight new titles enter the top 20 including threewide releases.

Horror film Sawproved the best performer playing at just over 300 locations for an excellent$2.2m (£1.2m) weekend take despite its audience-limiting 18-certificate. Thesite average of $7,400 was the best of any film on release at the weekend.

Saw still had tosettle for second place, however, as UIP's Wimbledonmanaged a strong return of serve slipping just 12% in its second week onrelease and holding the box office trophy.

British gangster drama LayerCake also played well on its opening, its $1.96m (£1.1m) opening on 355sites including $282,192 (£157,105)from 290 sites.

Sky Captain And TheWorld Of Tomorrow proved less successful, limping into sixth place. Itstill fared better than bio-pic double Fox's De-Lovely and Icon's The LifeAnd Death Of Peter Sellers, however, which played in fifteenth andfourteenth respectively. Peter Sellers has yet to open in the Republic ofIreland.

Redbus Film Distribution saw a hit in the Republic OfIreland with a number one opening there for Irish comedy Man About Dog, launched in conjunction with Brendan McCaul at BVI.The film opens in the UK on Nov 12.
