Vertigo Films, one of the Spain’s leading distributors, has bought the Spanish rights to Jane Campion’s Cannes competition title Bright Star.

Andres Martin, general manager of Vertigo Films confirmed to ScreenDaily that the deal was completed with Pathe, who hold the sales rights, at Cannes last week.

Bright Star, starring Abbie Cornish and Ben Whishaw, is the story of the love affair between John Keats and Fanny Brawne. It failed to pick up any awards at Cannes, despite strong predictions from critics that it would.

The film is a Pathe, Screen Australia, BBC Films and UK Film Council co-production in association with the New South Wales Film And Television Office and Hopscotch International.

Bill Pohlad and Bob Berney’s new distribution venture has already picked up North American rights to the film.

An Spanish release date for Bright Star is yet to be confirmed.
