Beijing New Picture Film has confirmed that the director’s next project will be a two-part feature co-produced with Edko Films.

Zhang Yimou’s Beijing New Picture Film has confirmed that the director’s next project will be a two-part film entitled San Qiang Pai An Jing Qi (lit trans: Amazing Tales Of Three Guns).

The first part of the film will be a thriller and the second part, as previously reported on Screendaily.com, will be a comedy starring popular comedian Zhao Benshan’s two pupils Xiao Shenyang and Wang Xiaohua.

Beijing New Picture president and producer Zhang Weiping said the Chinese-language project will be jointly backed by Beijing New Picture and Hong Kong’s Edko Films. However, he declined to reveal the film’s production budget.

Shooting will start in early June in Gansu province for release at the end of 2009. Sun Honglei (Forever Enthralled) and Ni Dahong will star in the first thriller segment of the film.

Zhang Weiping also revealed that Zhang Yimou will start working on a drama adapted from the novel Thirteen Girls in Jinling City at the end of this year.

Zhang began preparing the film in late 2008 after finishing his duties on the 2008 Beijing Olympics ceremonies. The novel tells the story of thirteen prostitutes who sacrificed their lives to save a group of convent girls during the Nanjing massacre in 1937.
