The Bet Collector, directed by the Philippines' Jeffrey Jeturian, was awarded best film and bestactress for Gina Pareno's performance in the Asian Competition at Osian'sCinefan in New Delhi on Sundaynight.

Pareno plays a middle-agedhousewife who collects bets for the illegal game of 'jueteng' in the film,which also picked up the Fipresci jury award.

The jury for the AsianCompetition declined to give a best actor award but gave a special mention toTurkish director Kutlug Ataman's 2 Girls,about the intense relationship between two Istanbul teenagers. Special mentions went to Love's Lone Flower, from Taiwan's Tsao Jui-yuan, and Bangladeshi feature Homeland.

The Asian Competition juryincluded filmmakers Stanley Kwan, Ryuichi Hiroki, Adoor Gopalakrishnan and XieFei along with Indonesian actress Jajang Noer.

Meanwhile, best film in theIndian Competition was awarded to TheCleansing Rites, directed by Ramachandra PN, about a family dealing with changingsocial structures in southern India in the 1960s. Subrato Sen's Calcutta Unabashed, about the city's angst-ridden youth, won thebest actor and actress awards for Subrat Dutta and Tannishta Chatterjee respectively.

The NETPAC award went toThai romantic drama Midnight My Love,directed by Khongdej Jaturanrassamee, which played in the Asian Frescoessection.

Although events in the Lebanon and the recent Mumbai bombings cast a shadow overthis year's edition, the festival has evolved into a high-spirited showcase of recentAsian cinema, with a focus on Arab and Indian films.

The ten-day event alsohosted the third edition of Talent Campus India and a lively programme of seminars, lectures andpanel discussions. The two-day "International Media Round Table" provided aforum for local and overseas journalists to discuss the current state of filmwriting.

Co-organised by Asian cinemajournal Cinemaya and private arts organisation Osian's, Cinefan was launched in1999 and is now the major film festival in the Indian capital. It also has afocus on Asian art and held an exhibition of Osian's archives along with anauction of Indian art, books and cinema memorabilia.
