The Cannes Film Festivalhas set Fanfan La Tulipeas the opening film for this year's event. The film is a remake ofChristian-Jaque's 1952 swashbuckler.

Directed by Gerard Krawczykwho has enjoyed immense success with the last two Taxi films, Fanfan stars Vincent Perez and PenelopeCruz. The film will be released in France on May 14, the same day it willopen the Cannes fest out of competition.

Produced by Luc Besson'sEuropa Corp, Besson also co-wrote the script with Jean Cosmos based on the 1952script by Rene Fallet and Rene Wheeler. The 1952 Fanfan was the third time the story had been told on film and was presented in competition at Cannes. It earned Christian-Jaquethe best director prize.
