The Australian Film Finance Corporation (FFC) has unveiled plans to guarantee producers overhead payments and give them greater access to the revenue streams generated by their projects.

A group of 24 producers calling itself the Independent Producers' Initiative (IDI) emerged in November to force some action on terms of trade and has been negotiating with the FFC since.

The FFC has proposed mandatory overheads, capped at A$200,000 ($131,000), to be included in all budgets. It also suggests that overheads be set at 2% for films with budgets exceeding A$6m ($3.9m), 3% for films costing A$3.5m-A$6m ($2.3m-$3.9m), and 4% for films of less than A$3.5m ($2.3m). Producers will also receive a service fee of A$40,000 ($31,000) for delivering marketing items.

The FFC has also agreed to change the current profit split from 60:40 in its favour, to 50:50, and to allow producers with the appropriate expertise to take over the exploitation of films once the initial licence terms of the sales agent and/or distributor have expired.
