Despite the beating it took from the critics, The League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen opened at number one this week - largely due to a lack of strong competition, but also thanks to a very visible poster campaign that's been running for some weeks.

Another surprise was the poor performance of Harrison Ford's Hollywood Homicide which premiered in Deauville in early September but which looks like it could barely get arrested this week.

At number two, romantic comedy and Sophie Marceau vehicle Je Reste! confirms France's taste for home made films that's been healthy with recent hits like Jeux d'Enfants - still in the top ten after 3 weeks.

German sleeper Goodbye Lenin! also lived up to positive word of mouth with the smallest fall off of any film this week.
