One family-friendly title at Filmart features Gregory Popovich sharing the spotlight with dozens of rescued cats and dogs.
The independent not-yet-finished Chaplin-esque comedy, Popovich And The Voice Of The Fabled American West, is the only film touted at Filmart that features 35 animals, most of which are cats and dogs rescued from the pound in Las Vegas.
It is probably also the only film that has a booth all to itself that is staffed by a producer rather than a sales agent.
“The brothers (co-directors Mike and Jerry Thompson) had a previous movie that they distributed in the traditional way and did not get the results they wanted, so we decided to represent it ourselves,” said Todd Hailstone, explaining why he was directly representing the film.
He produced Popovich with the leading man, Moscow-born juggler and animal trainer Gregory Popovich, and May May Luong.
“We thought Filmart would be a good start (for the film) because family-friendly material is big here and it felt like the circus acts and juggling would be appropriate, and everyone loves animals,” he added.
Popovich plays a former circus legend from Russia, now a struggling street performer in Las Vegas chasing the American dream, who has to save the junkyard where he live with his rescued animals.
It’s a story rooted in reality except that former Moscow Circus member Popovich is so successful that the movie had to be filmed over six months becausehe was often performing his popular Popovich Comedy Pet Theater either in Las Vegas or on tour.
Hailstone expects to be able to deliver Popovich And The Voice Of The Fabled American West in June.
