Imagi International Holdings has appointed former DreamWorks CGI animator Tim Cheung as vice president, animation.

According to Imagi deputy chairman, co-CEO and chief creative officer Francis Kao, Cheung will oversee the animation for all of Imagi's CGI feature films and will manage company's team of around 400 Hong Kong-based animators.

Cheung was previously with DreamWorks for 12 years during which he contributed to the Shrek trilogy, for which he was directing animator, supervising animator and head of character animation, respectively.

He was also a senior animator on Antz, and wrote and directed two award-winning shorts, Rolling Stone (1995) and Gabola The Great (1997).

Cheung's initial assignments at Imagi - which has development operations in Los Angeles and a production studio in Hong Kong - will be the films Gatchaman and Astro Boy, both of which will be released worldwide in 2009.

Imagi's first theatrical movie TMNT has grossed more than $90m worldwide since its release in March.
