UIP's Intolerable Cruelty has charmed the Italian box office, where it opened at number one on 330 screens grossing a massive screen average of $9,233. While the film's star George Clooney graced the covers of weekly Italian magazines, Intolerable Cruelty earned a huge $3,059,641, squeezing The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen down into second place with total earnings of $4,778,828.

The weekend's only other Hollywood new entry, Columbia Tristar's Bad Boys II, opened less well, earning $1,296,277 from 303 screens, although it posted a solid screen average of $4,278.

Meanwhile, Bernardo Bertolucci's erotic saga, The Dreamers, continued to perform well, earning a further $1,170,529 for Medusa which brings its running total to an impressive $3,563,495 in its second week on release.

Jason Biggs' two films currently on release in Italy also continue to do well. American Pie: The Wedding has earned $5,920,106 for UIP three weeks after its release, and Woody Allen's comedy Anything Else grossed a further $236,850 this weekend for Medusa, placing it in 8th position with a running total of $1,795,815.
