Bengali actress Churni Ganguly, who appeared in Kaushik Ganguly’s Sound and Laptop, is set to make her directorial debut with a feature film about Bangladeshi author Taslima Nasrin.

The film titled Banished…! (Nirbashito) revolves around Nasrin’s life after her banishment from Bangladesh, due to her controversial work, in 1994.

“It talks about the loneliness and lack of creativity Nasrin has faced during her banishment when she was disowned by her own country Bangladesh and later by the people who speak the same language as her in India,” said Ganguly. “Nasrin has read the treatment and liked it.”

The film, which is part-documentary, part-fiction, shows Nasrin in search of her motherland.

“Many Indian financiers I approached are wary of her name as they think that can interfere with the domestic release of the film. That gives me a kick. I would go to any length to make a film that I believe in,” said Ganguly.

Ganguly is in talks with a US producer for the film which will be shot in Kolkata, Bangladesh and Sweden.
